Castello Estense

The castle built in 1385 to protect the Este family, still has the tipycal aspect of a mediaval fortress, even thought the marble balconies and the tower loggias remind us of the trasformations of the XVI century, when the building became the new ducal palace. The Filippi school (XVI century) painted thw inside frescoes

The Cathedral, dedicated to the patron saints of the city, George and Maurelius, is a harmonic unity of Rimanesque solidity and exquisite Gothic elegance.

Teatro Comunale

Designed by Antonio Foschini at the end of the XVIII century, it is famous for the Prose, Ballet, Opera and Concerts Seasons. It is possible to visit il with a guige, on previous arrangement.

Palazzo dei Diamanti

Palazzo dei Diamanti is completely covered whit diamond-shaped stones which make its aspect absolutely unique. In the large rooms on the first floor you can see the collections if the National Picture Gallery while the Galleery? of Modern and Contemporary Art, on the ground floor, houses international art.

Casa Romei

Casa Romei houses an interesting museum of painting and sculpture, with works of art that come from many places that have now disappeared in Ferrara: in the Lapidary on the ground floor there are marble and brickwork friezes, sculptures, escutcheons and tombstones while on the first floor numerous frescoes removed from former churches can be admired.

Casa Ludovico Ariosto

The house, probably built to the design of Girolamo da Carpi, has a simple but elegant brick faà?ade. Interior: on the first floor a small museum dedicated to the poet has been laid out.

The Cathedral Museum is sited in the ex-church of San Romano. It forms part of the Civic Museums of Ancient Art and mostly holds objects belonging to the Cathedral.

The building odf the Sinagogues also houses the Jewish Museum, rich in documents adnd objects that illustrate the history and traditions of the Jewes of Ferrara.

Museo Civico di Storia Naturale

The Museum is organised with an educational scope, offering the visitor an extensive display of mammal, reptile, fish, bird, invertebrate and insect species and specimens covering many branches of the natural sciences, such as zoology (the ornithological collection is especially exhaustive) and entomology.

Chiesa di San Cristoforo alla Certosa

The Charterhouse, built by Borso d'Este in 1461, was transformed into a monumental cemetery at the beginning of the 1800s and conserves important sculptures.

Palazzina Marfisa d'Este

It is a splendid example of a 16th-century high-class residence and was once surrounded by magnificent gardens that connected it to other buildings, known as Casini di San Silvestro.

Palazzo Bonacossi

This palazzo was built in 1468 for an exile from Florence and was redesigned many times. Its most notable feature is the high central tower.

Palazzo Costabili

The work was commissioned to the court architect Biagio Rossetti, who accomplished in it one of his masterpieces. The grandiose building centres around the courtyard of honour, only completed on two sides and adorned with two open galleries in marble.

The visit begins in the oldest wing (14th century) of the palace, where works of art of a various nature, belonging to the collections of the Museum of Schifanoia are exhibited. Thera are neoclassical sculptures and several paintings.

Palazzo Municipale

Palazzo Municipale

Begun in 1245, the City Hall was the residence of the Este family until the 16th century. The main entrance is through Volto del Cavallo, opposite the Cathedral, and is flanked by two sculptures, copies of the original 15th century ones.
